Are you smarter than a 5th Grader?

Sunday 17th January

Yesterday parents found out the answer to the question “Are you smarter than a 5th Grader?”.   A first for WSP, Open Classroom was the idea of 3rd Grade teacher Susan Stevenson.  The idea came from a similar event that Mrs Stevenson helped create at the Chicago Waldorf School where Susan used to teach.

The morning kicked off with Mrs Stevenson teaching a 7th Grade Chemistry Class.  Parents participated in the Lime Kiln Experiment.

The second class of the morning was a 5th Grade math lesson.  It brought new meaning to the game show “Are you smarter than a 5th grader?”  When many parents reached for pencil and paper in response to Ms Parashchuk’s math question, they were quickly reminded that this was mental arithmetic and no paper and pencil should be necessary.  This class clearly challenged participants math capabilities and really required parents to step outside our comfort zone.

Ms Parashchuk later explained that the morning’s math lesson was the warm up portion of her math class.  The children in her 5th Grade go significantly beyond the math problems participants had encountered today.

The last lesson of the day was Spanish class, taught by Maestro Isabelle which proved to be a fun, inclusive and active way to learn language.

Many thanks to all the parents who participated and to the Faculty who made “Open Classroom” possible.
